Dubai and Abu Dhabi are ranked as the top two cities in the Middle East region for quality of life, according to the Mercer report ( May 2009)
In the past 18 months an increasing number of recruitment companies have opened offices in Dubai as many international companies are relocating or establishing local operations there.
The types of jobs in Dubai are broad and vary depending on your training and level of expertise. The big employment industries tend to be Construction, Finance, Exploration and Hospitality. Despite the global economic slowdown, there are still a large number of job opportunities in Dubai with many sectors struggling to meet the demand for top class employees.
Many firms use international head hunters to secure the best talent. The exception to this is the property sector, where many firms have reduced head count in the past couple of months. The finance industry particularly around the Dubai International Financial Centre (DIFC) has attracted many employees from Europe. The total headcount within the centre now exceeds 12,000.
Recently the UAE government has pushed hard to reduce unemployment amongst nationals in Dubai. Local businesses are encouraged to recruit nationals. This process, known as Emiratisation (the replacement of expatriates with UAE nationals in the workforce), is making its presence felt in numerous sectors.
If you are considering a career change, research well the strengths of the Dubai market. In recent years the hospitality and tourism sectors have exploded. Construction has been one of the big employers but is now suffering from the global economic slowdown. However opportunities still selectively exist in the sector.
With the opening of Health Care City and new hospitals in Dubai, opportunities in these areas will continue to exist. If you are a teacher, there are also opportunities as new schools in Dubai come on stream to cater for the increasing population. However, the efforts teachers make in developing our children’s education is not always reflected in their remuneration.
Getting a job in any foreign country is often not straight forward and Dubai is no different. It is however a very positive place to work, you simply have to see what is developing here, to see that a positive attitude prevails. Carry out research on any perspective company you are meeting, prepare well for interview and demonstrate you willingness to be flexible in an ever changing market. Remember Middle Eastern employment experience can be a very valuable addition to your curriculum vitae.
